Several years ago a nearby lightning strike apparently damaged the transformer that supplied power to my shop. After blowing several alarm panels and noting that my cordless tool chargers were humming, I finally got smart and stuck a volt meter in an outlet. The 110 v outlets read north of 150 v and the 220 outlets were in the 300 v range. The problem was solved when the power company replaced the transformer. Cheap voltmeters can be found at any of the big box stores.
