Turning Archive

Don't know if you'll see this or not but turning threads may create it's own problems. This lathe and Logan's (like I have) require a certain set of gears be installed on the left end of the lathe for EACH tpi you want to cut. Then again you could have what is called a gear box on your particular lathe with multiple gears inside it and levers on it to move to set up the right combination of gears for some tpi's.
The big problem is that 8 tpi which is common in woodturning lathes is NOT a standard, the closes standard being 7 tpi. Sooo, you probably don't have the right gears to do 8 tpi and it may be a problem to get them. I know that Boston Gear probably has them or will make them but then the problem becomes what they cost.
If you don't have a gear box and have to change gears on left side then you gotta figure out if you can do 8 tpi with the combination of gears you have, go to the manual.
Turning threads, so I've been told isn't all that hard, BUT, reading how to do it then putting that into practice is another story.
After reading it a couple of times I gave up and took what I needed done to the local machine shop and had it back the next day. I usually don't give up that easy but as I get older I realize there are some things I really don't need to know, the time taken up trying to learn it is more valuable to me. When I was younger and much less money then I learned how to do it out of necessity.
I call this "buying back time".
