Yes, I turn them using a chuck, however, a faceplate would be a good place to start, at least on one side. Then, it has to be reversed for the other side. No holes from the faceplate can show, so some planning is required. I've actually turned round log sections between centers to start, then mount in a chuck to finish turn.
