I started by putting dates on them in the beginning. That's great for the ones I give my kids or family. But since I now sell at a monthly studio walk, I no longer date new work. In fact, I took the dates off a few pieces that I have shown. You could always put the date on in code. A letter for the month and the year in Roman Numerals. This months work would be EXII, or something in that vein. Just be sure to write down the code for the family.
