I turn mostly furniture parts. I never got the bowl bug. I asked the same question you did and got some good advice. I started with a 3/4 rougher, 1/2 spindle, 1/8 parting, and a 3/4 or 1 skew. I added a 3/8 gouge for smaller details on legs and such. Those have served me well for quite a while now. Later, I added a 1/2 bowl and a couple of scrapers. Honestly, I rarely use those. Recently, I added a couple of the EasyWood tools (carbide tips). I really like those. All of my tools are Sorby that I waited to buy when there was a sale. I'm sure I'll use them for the rest of my days. They are very nice tools. So there you go, I'm not experienced - still learning, but I thought I'd share what worked for me.
