If one has to force the blade in coring, he or she is definitely doing something wrong! If that's the case then it is usually one of 3 things: either the tool is dull, shavings or sap gunk is blocking the cutting edge, or the setup is wrong. One of the things folks need to learn with the McNaughton is how to hold the blade back a bit, especially in the transition area.
