No I don't sharpen on the side of the wheel. I have occasionally for special tools but you can't apply any pressure at all or you risk fracturing the stone which is quite dangerous.
The grinding I'm doing for sharpening on the edge of the stone is extremelylight. It doesn't take much pressure to do that grind.
