Subject:
newbie tool ? (carbide or hss)

Earl
As stated I am new to turning. I apologize if this has already been discussed to death but I missed it if it was. I am having a hard time learning to sharpen my gouges. I could spend a lot more money on equipment for sharpening and that may make a difference. I have the Wolverine Vari-grind jig and home made jig to slide in and out under the wheel. With the price of the carbide tools coming down should I even worry about learning to sharpen? Is there some reason to learn to sharpen the traditional gouges or can I just use with the carbides? Thanks for any help with this
Earl
