The idea to do the cutting on HALF of the HF, temporily attached to a flat board would be safer. A paper joint in the orginal blank would make parting into two halves fairly easy. Leaving the walls thick - 1/4" to 3/8" would provide some strength. The order of the cuts would also be important, probably starting in the center and working outward so the wood to be sliced next would have some support on one side.
