Clear silicone caulking is one of the best adhesives for this. It stays flexible and holds really well. I use spar varnish for things that are going to be in the sun although if it's in the weather very much you will have to rejuvinate it about every other year or so. I made my last outdoor project out of mahagony and didn't finish it at all. I just let it go barnwood gray.
