Ellis, I think the problem is the pictures are too large. Use a resizing utility, but don't change the picture's size but reduce the picture quality to around 80%. It's well established one can't see the difference in quality but the picture size is reduced significantly. I just made a PDF from the docx file, without resizing, and the file is only 548KB.
