My wife has a small scar above her one eye from the time she fell off of the bed trying to run away from a spider. I assume that you react similarly to snakes.
I have become the bug catcher in my house. With a spider, I figure for every one that I don't smash, I probably saved myself a mosquito bite or two. I am not overly fond of spiders, so I trap them under a cup, and then slide a paper under it.
I try not to kill anything except moquitoes, which I kill without exception. Mosquitoes have killed more people than snakes, sharks, spiders, and other scary creatures combined. (maybe not if you add ticks and fleas?) From time to time, I will stop to shush a snake off of the main roadway, or they end up looking like you snake, minus the woodshavings...
