I have to assume that the snake wanted to get out as much as you wanted him to leave? I'd recommend that you stop killing snakes (even though you hate them) as they do far more good than evil. They eat rodents, which bring ticks and other things into your surrounding as well as a variety of diseases.

I don't know snakes very well, so I cannot tell you what kind is was, but I doubt it posed any real danger. I would have used my stick to usher him back outside...
