Hi Steve,
The pro turners who do lots of traveling and demos need to keep weight down when they fly. I think that the new QR set weighs in at close to four pounds. That is a lot less than comparable full-size tools like I also pictured.
I like to make ornaments and will demo them here on Thursday. The 14" tools, 7" and 7", are just right for making them. Larger tools may work, but they would not be as easy to use.
If you were to use the miniGlaser 3/8" spindle gouge for a day making ornaments, I promise you that you would want one and that you would use it.
There may be other reasons for mini-tools, but if so, I have forgotten them.
