I've introduced 15-20 people to woodturning, mostly scouts from local troops that I assist. My introduction to the machine starts with:

"This is a wood lathe. It is used to spin a piece of wood so that it can be cut into various rounded forms. There are a number of ways it can and will kill you before you know what happened if you don't respect its ability to cause harm. While this is a rare occurrence, if you think it can't happen to you, you will be the one who proves what I just said is true."

And then we count the ways.
