Two years ago there was a woodturner in Canada, killed when the bowl he was turning "blew up"
Unless you have heard otherwise, all the news reports I saw, stated the the college student was killed working on a wood lathe (not that there is that much difference if one's hair gets tangled in the chuck)

As for the actual death rate, the rule of thumb is typical death rate at any activity is anywhere from 2x to 10x what any person sees reported in the media. This is due to the "local" media not carrying any particular story as it "didn't make the cut" (for that day).

As some examples, when was the last time you heard of anyone dying in a martial arts competition? (average is 2 per year in Judo alone). Being crushed by a Farm Tractor? (8 in Washington State in 2010 alone).

One of the neat things about having a wife that is both a Turner and edits CE classes for EMTs and Paramedics is the odd(ish) facts she retains.
