For what it's worth the skew is the one tool I can pick up with complete confidence of using without some stupid mistake. I'm guaranteed to make at least one bad entry with the bowl gouge and need to re smooth the face. I'll make a nice cove on the the side of a vase when using a spindle gouge. My theory is both the bowl and spindle gouge are easier to use so I don't pay as much attention as is required. They also both make such nice shavings it is easy to get carried away watching them just peel away. While with the skew just an instance lapse will give some rather dramatic spirals.
