Why do towns that give out tickets for 2 mph over the speed limit have fewer speeders? Because the rules are enforced.
The concept I think is pretty simple. All turning tools have the exact same set of rules, but the skew enforces them. If you get a little bit off bevel with a gouge, it will still cut, although you can pass a point of cutting start scraping. Beginners don't see this as being such a big deal because they don't understand what the bevel is nor what it does for them.
Learn the skew, and the other tools are almost automatic...
