Thank you for the information and references, In spite of all your help, my tops do not yet tippy.
The most encouraging info was that some of the rest of you have the same trouble, and I am not unique as a tippy top klutz.
I shall continue to try, and if I find a magic 'open sesame', I will share it with all.
