***SURVEY: THE IDES OF JANUARY (+5)*** *PIC*

Ellis Walentine
Yes, folks, it's time yet again to trot out another in our ongoing series of thought-provoking, bi-monthly woodworking surveys. This new question was suggested by Barb Siddiqui and is inspired by a single word in Charlie Belden's recent "Hypothesis Challenge" on the Turning board: Intimidation. We all have an intimidation threshold --- maybe more than one --- in our woodworking endeavors: the point at which conscience or fear or hard-won experience kicks in and says, "Wait! This is too dangerous," or "I can't do that." This month, I'd like to hear about the things that scare or intimidate you -- lines you've drawn for whatever reason, how these limits have shaped or limited your woodworking style or accomplishments, and what, if anything, you've done to manage and/or surmount them.

As always, your answers will be excerpted, collated, sliced, diced and served up in our "News & Views" column in the next issue of Woodworker West magazine, which, incidentally, has just launched a digital version.

Thanks as always for participating!

To celebrate Woodworker West's 24th year, it has posted a digital edition of its January-February issue at: www.sopdigitaledition.com/woodworkerwest , including Ellis Walentine's "News & Views from WoodCentral.com" column.

Also in this issue, there is a preview of the exhibit "Family Tree: 65 years of Woodworking in Northern California," which is opening this weekend, as well as pictorials from the Hawaii Wood Show, Veneer-Tech's Craftsman's Challenge, and the Western Design Conference, plus two special employment opportunities in the Marketplace section.
