Need help veneering

>I have never veneered before. I have a piece of veneer with an inlay on (in?) it. The veneer is QSWO and measures 55" X 5" the inlay is centered, 8' down from the top. I want to glue it to a piece of QSWO that I am using for a door style. The style will be 2 1/2" X 50" and I want the inlay 8" down from the top. (I am actually doing two of these- both styles)

Do I cut the veneer before I glue it to the style or glue it & then cut it. How do I cut it? Do I place the veneer on a flat surface and put the receiving board over it & use a razor knife to trim both sides & the end? Won't this leave a ragged edge?

TIA, Joe
