Don't over simplify the process and of course don't over complicate it either.

No, it's not rocket science. I've never related filing saws to rocket science and I haven't seen anyone else refer to it as that either.

Personally, I have no reason or purpose to encourage or discourage anyone to learn to file their own saws. I'm sure if anyone has a desire to do so, they will. I see no need to possibly cause someone who doesn't have the desire to file their saws to feel they are somehow less of a person just because I know how to sharpen saws and they don't.

People who write me for information regarding filing saws, I always answer their questions. In some cases, the emails have gone on for weeks. Some people learn it faster than others.

I know how to make a wood chisel do what I need it to do. I also know how to file a saw so it will do what it is designed to do. No one is going to convince me that one is no different than the other.

This, IMO, is not the place to teach others how to sharpen saws. Too many cooks who are usually contradicting each other and cause mainly confusion for the person interested in learning.

It's not rocket science and it's not brain surgery and it's not bridge building and it's not following a pattern and making a jacket. My wife can do that, but I wouldn't even attempt it. Sharpening saws is much easier.

Another two cents.
