I never, or rarely secure the workpiece when it is wood while using a drill press. I virtually always secure metal though. I had one of my scarrier moments in the shop when I turned on a spade bit (looks like a shovel) and hadn't reduced the speed enough. It started to wobble violently and then bent upwards to 90 degrees and then sheared off and flew violently across the room. I had to decide whether to dive to the floor, or reach up for the switch: 9.6, 9.7, 8.8, 9.3...
