Actually that isn't what I am describing, though I can well understand where you would get that idea.

What I am describing is sticking a 3/4" tenon in a 1" parallel sided hole, and filling in the difference with epoxy. Only problems with that approach is it would look very sloppy, and provide no control surfaces for decent alignment of the parts. So to solve those problems, I have some 3/4" hole in the bottom of the mortise to align the tip of the tenon, and I leave the 1" shoulder long enough to engage the 1" top of the hole. There is a whole lot of 3/4" tenon in 1" hole between the ends, and everything gets filled up with epoxy. Pretty much the strongest joint of the kind in woodworking... If you call that woodworking.
