Woodworking In The Movies

R.J. Whelan
>I watched a movie with SWMBO/LOML last night called Nights in Rodanthe.

The lead female character (played by Diane Lane) was a woodworker, which of course grabbed my attention.

When the character opened the tool roll and pulled out a Japanese chisel I thought to myself "... wow, they got the props right". Then she used a hand plane that looked to be shop made; and she used it correctly. Next she sawed out some DTs with a coping saw (not how I do it but I know a lot of chaps who do). So, not only did they get the props right, but somebody schooled her on the techniques and she was very convincing.

Turns out the woodworker who produced the finished product, and taught her the techniques, is named David Finck. The following link will take you to an article on him and his part in the movie -----http://www.highcountrypress.com/weekly/2008/09-04-08/piece_by_local_woodworker.htm

One doesn't see a whole lot of woodworking in the movies so this was kind of a treat .... rj
