>In this case, it's better to build the top first. All I needed for support to build the top was a pair of sawhorses. For the joinery needed for the base, a real worksurface will be really helpful, so now I have somewhere to do that work. I'd hate to try to do the mortise and tenon joints on sawhorses.

Also, this is a Roubo type bench, so the legs are going to be mortised directly into the top, and I didn't know exactly how wide the top was going to be when I finished. Now I'll be able to exactly size the base to the top.
