Subject:
Data from 1500 chairs *PIC*
Response To:
shaker chair stock ()

Bill Tindall, E.TN
>This chair is made by Haley-Daniels, Berea KY. (the seat was done by a neighbor and I did the finish) They told me they have made 1500 of them. They are made from KD commercial lumber. They boil the pieces to be bent. I was told they rarely have failures from bending. When they do, it seems to be from lumber with a particular grain which I surmised was reaction wood.

Conclusions: a commercial shop whose customers won't spend the money to have a chair made with traditional techniques has found that riving stock from green wood is unnecessary. They sell chairs for less than half of what Boggs sells them for. Boggs couldn't make a living in Berea and is trying trendy Asheville.

My butt doesn't care whether lumber is riven or sawed, only the quality of construction, appearance and comfort. These are very nice chairs, successfully made, as best I can tell.
