Subject:
Rural Quebec Farm House Interior Wood Paneling

Jim Shaver - Oakville, Ont
>A few weekends ago I took Dana down to the Royal Ontario Musuem for a day of fun. We spent most of the day in the mineral gallery and she enjoyed the first 4 minutes of the 2 hours I spent looking at crystals…

After that we wandered the museum and found ourselves in the Canadiana portion near the end of the day. On display in the gallery was the following paneling and details from a rural Quebec Farm House, the Belanger home, simply fascinating and I wanted to share this with you

This is a drawing of the stone farm house the paneling was removed from,

Notes made from the display:
The Character of this paneled room from the Belanger house reflects that of an urban Quebec town house of the 19th century or perhaps a seigneurial manor house in the countryside. It was an anomaly that this paneled room was found instead in the modest home of a rural farmer and that the wood carvings and details are so similar to those found in churches of that period.

The rooms decoration is attributed to Amable Charron (1785-1856), a local woodworker and sculptor who apprenticed with Louis Amable Quevillon, one of the most notable church sculptors of that period in Quebec.

It was amazing to see the carved detail and balance of the work, simply inspiring and it must have been a real treasure to have been discoved. I was unable to find out why it was removed from the home, perhaps the structure was beyond saving. None the less, wonderful to be able to see this and share it.

Dana was simply over whelmed with the dentil details, so perfectly executed…Photobucket

Opps sorry, I need to correct that in was the “dental” detail in the dinosaur gallery….

Take care,
Jim
