Mission accomplished. I turned the pegs slightly over sized on the lathe, trimmed off the ends with a sharp chisel then tapered them very slightly on the drill press with medium sandpaper.

Slathered the joint with glue, got a bigger hammer and whaled away at it. Actually a bit more care than that, but you get the idea.

Hope I never need to take those joints apart.
