The paint on the decking was also a mystery to me. I assumed when we bought the house that the deck was PT wood which is why they painted it. I am replacing the deck because there are some rotting planks with a lot of peeling paint plus after 20 odd years the joists under the deck are becoming suspect.

When i cut away at a couple of the planks the smell of cedar was obvious imediatly which made my wonder why they painted the deck in the first place.

I was thinking about using a circular saw to cut away the sides and then using a bandsaw to remove the face. Unfortunately it is not my bandsaw and i would have to truck the wood to a shop where i rent tool time and i am not sure if they would appreciate me cutting up old cedar decking on their machines. I also wonder what my wife would say if i started power sanding in the drive way, it is sure to make a mess.

I will have to take another look at this as i remove the planks.
