I was taught many years ago that when flattening something such as a plane sole when using sandpaper on a flat surface to have a large enough surface to be able to move the item being flattened in a figure 8 motion. This motion is meant to counteract any tilting in all directions.

I can easily imagine this being successful with something smaller than the sole of a plane but in my way of thinking, a plane might be too big on a standard size sheet of sandpaper.
