>Thanks for the replies. I do have a LV cabinet scraper that I'll try out, and what others said about a scrub plane makes sense too. Might grind an aggresive radius on the cheap #5's iron.

However there is one problem I haven't taken into account: Friction. If I get too energetic with the plane, friction from the sole starts melting the slab. Well, I guess I could rub the sole of the tool with cocoa butter and flip over the slab every so often....
