>What I do is invert the object then mark each leg with a story stick. When this doesn't work, I put the object on its legs, shim one leg until the top is where you want it. Then using a small stick or a pencil- anything with uniform thickness, mark that thickness on each leg, up from the floor.

That's how I do it.
