In this case, one can avoid tearout with extremely fine shavings no matter how the plane is set up. On the other hand a scrub plane can often leave a curly surface worse than when it started. You can plane it very nicely with a fine setting and a tight mouth, but at the cost of many passes. I think a double iron plane is more efficient here.
