I use Hammersnipe, the free service. Used it many times, and it always works. I recommend it without reservation.

Here's the thing: the snipers don't know your max. bid. They don't know you're beside the computer at the close. They may be sound asleep or mowing the grass when the auction ends. They just know what they're willing to pay for the item. That's the only 'secret' of sniping, is to put a max. bid in there that you're willing to win with, or lose with.

Now if you put your max. bid in early, then sure as little green apples, somebody is gonna come along and dog your bid, and start pecking away at you. That's why you want to snipe: You can put in your real max. bid, and not get pecked at. But you only get one shot.
