>Well I'm not sure. I've used cedar for fences before, and it is easy to work with. I just have this rough cut white oak around that I've been meaning to use for some time, and thought I would avoid some expense... OTOH buying white oak to make up the difference in wood I need would probably be as or more expensive as buying cedar for the whole thing. Maybe what I'll do, is use the oak for the posts and rails, and buy cedar for the pickets. That will make this project go much faster anyway, which will make Ellen happy. Thanks Scott for the word about depth of the posts. I did not know that and probably would have not buried them deep enough.

Warren, I don't think I quite got your meaning about the rails -- you mean they should only be 1/4" from the top and bottom? That seems too little. Or did you mean 1/4 of the height of the fence? -- that's probably it.
