>There are several options:
1. eBay: Start searching for "Stanley 40" or "scrub plane", and you should find several at any one time. Used Stanley 40's go for $40-60, depending on auction fever.
2. Shiny new toy: Lie-Nielsen ($145), Lee Valley ($109), and ECE ($80) all currently make scrub planes. The first two are metal bodied, the last is wooden.
3. Convert a plane you already have: Jack planes seem to be the candidate of choice for this. If you get a second blade for your jack plane, grind and sharpen it so that it has a more pronounced camber, and set it so that it protrudes more from the mouth, you'll have a serviceable scrub plane.
I've got an ECE wooden bodied scrub that does well for me. I found it on eBay.
One question: you mentioned that that your low angled jack plane is unwieldy to use one handed. I can't imagine trying to use a scrub plane one handed, given the amount of wood that gets hogged off with each pass. Am I missing something in your question?
