Subject:
Longest curl contest

Michael Brady
>I am taking a swipe...so to speak... at my first planeing contest this Saturday. Just wondering if anyone would care to offer some suggestions that might help me go home the big winner. I think I will use my bevel up low angle jack plane (LN), with the mouth closed down pretty tight. I'm not sure if they are going for longest and thinnest curl or just longest. I also do not know what timber is being used, although someone told me cedar is often used. On practice boards I have had no problems getting full length shavings, but that should be easy for anyone who bothers to drive twenty miles to do this. My approach was a stroke like I would use with a jointer plane; ie., straight, level, no skew, and good pressure on the front knob through the pass. I'll let you know what happens.
