Very possible, but I would choose "unproven hypothesis" instead of superstition or religious observance.
The thing is, no one seems to question the presenter, all is anecdotal evidence. That's not the way science works.
If natural stones are better, and they produce a better edge while leaving the bevel "frosty", then there should be a scientific explanation as to why this is the case. Anything less doesn't cut the mustard IMHO.
