I do not have an opinion on Japanese chisels as I don't own any. I do however share the same skepticism as the O.P regarding the high level of mysticism and dollars spent on sharpening stones. But while it is not for me, nor would I recommend it for a newbie, every person can and should decide for themselves what stones to buy.
