Subject:
Finish for beech plane - oil soak?

Scott in Douglassville, PA
>Hi, everyone -

I'm converting an old 6" coffin smoother to a compass plane. The body's been reconfigured, and I'm wondering what I should do for a finish. An old David Charlesworth article suggests soaking the body in raw linseed oil. This plane was nearly pristine when I got it, looking almost completely unused, but the wood seems a little dry, so the concept seems reasonable to me.

Anyone have any experience with this? Where'm I to pick up raw linseed oil (dePot/Lowe's, or order)? Any other alternatives?

Thanks,
Scott
