The No6 is a good general purpose plane.

I trained at our Technical Colleges in Cabinetmaking, and we didn't touch a No5. All work (jointing to final flattening) was done with a No6. It's long enough to joint with and short enough to smooth with. However, you will still need to get out a No4 or 4.5 smoother from time to time.

Doesn't take a long time to get used to using it, so enjoy the plane.
