An advantage of tails first is that the drawer sides can be nailed together, this assembly fitted to the opening by sawing to length and width, the bottom of the sides planed smooth, and dovetails cut- two for the price of one.
Nails for a nail gun make a good cut nail substitute. I separate them with a wire cutting pliers.
