I wonder how many of the additives developed by steel exporters were just to make a shiny product that presents well. I'm thinking of the Solingen and Seki works in the 1970s.

My cheapo Okapi folder from South Africa is still wikkid sharp but looks like an archeological find. My high Chromium Swiss army knife looks show room new (after 15 years) but never has been genuinely sharp.
