posts...I didn't know the right term for those wheels. I see them listed as "centerless grinding", and there's no used machine on craigslist (they're out of my price range, anyway, but would be an awesome toy).

It looks like they're used now mostly in CNC machines (when looking up "centerless grinding").

But a wide enough range of pictures to really have no clue (I see machines grinding camshafts, and huge long machines grinding round stock).

Safe to say that in most small and mid production of tools and knives, the belt grinder has taken over, but I don't see how a belt grinder can do some of the things that a hard wheel can do (like thicknessing accurately from edge to edge).
