Another interesting thing to note is the small scale of these operations. When one imagines an industrial setting where the target is the production of thousands or hundreds of thousands of items, these old workshops could no compete with automation in certain areas.

An article I read showed a rotating machine in a Stanley plant where dozens of chisels would be loaded for grinding. I think that's how the 700 series chisels were made.
