In the mid 18th century, they selected the best stuff for drawer fronts and door panels. The best stuff was figured wood, even if it had knots. For things made before the double iron, it is often quite something how finely the outsides of drawers were planed compared to the insides, which sometimes had massive tear out. The case sides more likely had clear wood.
