Thank you for the reference! We are both using the same edition, but I guess that chapter is a preface to the 1792 edition?
In an case, it is the only 18th c. source that I've seen that attempts to quantify the setting, and it is a more accurate measurement than Holtzapffel, who mentions 1/20 of an inch, or .050" imperial. In contrast, the passage you cite is roughly .020"-.030", and the difference between imperial and french will only affect these by about .002".
So all in all, a significant find for history nerds! Good work!
