Re: LN #4 Cap Iron Profile

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
My 4 1/2 has a "two part" bevel (I don't use it and have never polished it so it is as it came years ago). It starts steep and then abruptly changes to a more shallow bevel. It is crudely ground.

My LN #4 has a smooth bevel on the cap iron that is at least similar to Stanley. I have polished it but I do not recall altering the profile. Overall it looks more refined than the 4 1/2 which was purchased years earlier.

I have not noticed any difference in tear-out mitigation between this plane and a Bedrock 605 that I use more and fuss with refining more.

If you cap iron has a smooth arc with no steps in it, polish and use.
