Right, it only has the light under the stage. I don't know anything about the lighting that comes with stereoscopes, but I can say from experience that, because blades are very reflective, it's very useful to be able to move the light around to just the right position to get a good picture. If you had a microscope with lighting from above, I suppose that wouldn't prevent you from using a separate light if you wanted.

When I'm set up to take pictures with the microscope I do use my phone as the viewfinder.
